Down in the Rhône River Valley delta, where it spills into the Mediterranean, is the area known in France as “The Camargue.” Nobody knows where the approximately 2000 wild horses originated, or how long they’ve been here. They live unsheltered in the shallows of the delta, where they are cared for by “guardians,” or French cowboys. I was fortunate enough to join a small group of international photographers for a sunset shoot. Our guide arranges for 2-3 guardians to round up 8-10 horses for us to photograph galloping towards us at a very fast pace. We’re all in waders kneeling in the water as this happens 6-8 times before the light is too low to continue. The whole experience was so invigorating, and I’ll never forget just before the first run, the guide asks the photographers to bunch up together, shoulder-to-shoulder, kneeling in the water. He cautions us that otherwise, the horses might try to run through us, or jump over us. We look at each other and now understand why they had us sign that release of liability!
